Teen Zine Making Workshop

May 04, 2019— 1:00 pm

In celebration of Free Comic Book Day, come down to the Lewiston Public Library to write and create your own short book! You can make comics, poetry, collage art books, non-linear storytelling; the content is up to you. Participants will draw, write, collage and copy their own work into Zines, a DIY method of self-publishing.
The term “zine’ was coined in 1940 by a Science Fiction fan writer to describe the publications of fan fiction that he and his contemporaries were making at the time.  The fanzine gained popularity within the independent comic book and punk rock scenes.  Works are generally created on a single sheet of paper, then folded and cut to make a single signature. Zine makers often combine these individual signatures utilizing a Coptic binding in order to make a much longer book.
The Lewiston Public Library will provide everything that you need to create your own book; paper, pencils, pens, scissors, collage materials, and needle and thread.  The LPL’s own Mike Lewis, a working artist and educator from Portland, ME, will instruct you on everything you will need to make your own self published books; everything that is, but the ideas that fill the pages!
