The Lewiston Public Library’s Zine Collection Written up in Behind the Zines #9
The Lewiston Public Library Contributes to the National Zine Scene
Zines have traditionally helped to foster and create community, giving voice to like minded individuals who live on the fringe of more mainstream culture. Throughout the acquisition process of the Zine Atheneum and Ateeneum, I’ve made the acquaintance of a number of very exciting and creative people within the zine world. One such connection was with Billy McCall has contributed a number of materials to our zine collection, including Last Night at the Casino, Proof i Exist 28, and Behind the Zines No. 7 & 8.
A Zine Library for Lewiston, Maine
In our conversation back and forth about what the LPL was looking for and what Billy had to offer, Billy asked me if I would like to do a feature on creating the zine library. I quickly acquiesced, producing A Zine Library for Lewiston, Maine, which appears in the January issue of Behind the Zines alongside such zinester luminaries as John Porcellino of King Cat Comics and Todd Taylor of Razorcake. The article tells the story of the Zine Atheneum from its inception, through the planning and construction phases, and eventually to the stacks.
You can find issue #9 of Behind the Zines in the Zine Atheneum as well as a number of other local and national zines on the second floor of the Lewiston Public Library collection.
