Let’s Talk About It! Reading & Discussion Series

agrarianThe Library will be hosting a reading and discussion series this fall entitled, “People, Purpose and Place: grarian Novels in the USA.” Registrations are required for this monthly series which begins in September and runs through January of 2014.

The programs will take place in the Library’s Couture Room at 6:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, beginning on September 19 and running for five months, ending on January 16, 2014. The book to be discussed at the September session is “Prodigal Summer,” by Barbara Kingsolver.

The series is the brainchild of Anna Sims Bartel, a local humanities scholar who has facilitated reading and discussion programs for LPL for the last two years. According to Bartel, “These agrarian novels do far more than merely tell beautiful stories. They provide us with a way to examine the most pressing issues of our time through compelling narratives that open and engage us.”

These programs were made possible by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council. Additional funds for the series are being provided by the Friends of LPL.

To register for the series, call the Library’s circulation desk at 513-3134 or contact them via email at LPL@LewistonMaine.gov.
